Let's learn Cajun French together. The French spoken in Louisiana is as varied and spicy as the food and the music. We can do our bit to keep another Louisiana tradition alive.

Resources for Learning Louisiana French

A good place to start learning is Jim Léger's Cajun French Language Tutorials site. Jim's been posting lessons and audios since 2006.

The two books I use everyday are Cajun Self-Taught and A Dictionary of the Cajun Language both by Rev. Msgr. Jules O. Daigle. Both books are still in print and you should be able to find them at the online book retailer of your choice. (I bet there's probably a Google ad for these books on the sidebar now.) Cajun Self-Taught has a companion set of three CDs which are good for practice and working on your Cajun pronunciation.

Another book (coming soon) is the Dictionary of Louisiana French, an 800 page tome that catalogs the French language "as Spoken in Cajun, Creole, and American Indian Communities."

For learning and practice at home, I use Quizlet, an online quiz making tool (it does more than make quizzes). I've made a "Français Cadien/Cajun French" group there for sharing vocabulary sets. Jim Léger also has a number of Quizlet sets to go with his lessons (see "titchien").

Hopefully, if we work together, this group will be a good resource for learning Louisiana French.
